Everyone over 16 in Louisiana can get a COVID-19 vaccine. See where to make appointments
Anyone age 16 and over in Louisiana can now get vaccinated for COVID-19 for free, and more than 600 providers are booking appointments to administer the shots this week.
Gov. John Bel Edwards announced last week COVID-19 vaccinations will be open to anyone over 16 starting Monday, March 29. This week, Louisiana's Department of Health has identified 608 vaccine providers across the state who will get new doses of the three vaccines authorized for emergency use to administer.
Louisiana is also expecting a major increase in the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses being shipped to the state this week, as nearly 149,000 initial doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson varieties are headed to the state for distribution this week according to the Centers for Disease Control. That's a an increase of more than 30% from last week.
Only the Pfizer-BioNTech variety is authorized for use by people 16 and up. The other varieties are limited to residents 18 and older.
This week's vaccine providers include 254 chain pharmacies, 137 independent pharmacies, 57 hospitals, 41 public health providers, 35 urgent cares centers, 25 medical practices, 28 federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), 9 rural health clinics (RHCs) and 22 other healthcare providers, according to Louisiana’s Department of Health.
The vaccines are free, but appointments are required to get vaccinated at all participating locations. Contact info is available in the map below. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require a second dose to be administered three or four weeks after the initial shot to achieve full effectiveness, unlike the Johnson & Johnson variety.
As of Monday, 1,174,213 people in Louisiana have gotten at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 720,598 of those people have completed their vaccination regimens, giving them full protection of the vaccines.
Southwest Louisiana continues to lag the state’s larger population centers in per capita vaccinations, with the Lake Charles region last in the state at just 10.63% of residents having completed a COVID-19 vaccination regimen.
