Robert Mooney

A retired project engineer, he died at 3:05 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Baton Rouge General on Bluebonnet after a courageous two-year battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, he was an inspiration to everyone he encountered. The ALS eventually killed his body, but it never killed his spirits, always focusing on what he could do, rather than what he couldn't. He would have been 67 years old on Jan. 28, having been born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and raised in Plaquemine. Visiting will be at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine on Thursday, Jan.10, 2013 from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., celebrated by Father Cleo Milano and concelebrated by Father Paul McDuffie. Interment Grace Memorial Park, Plaquemine. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rita Jean Doiron Mooney, Plaquemine; a son Brian Paul Mooney and special friend, Ariane, Baton Rouge; a grandson, Max Mooney; and brothers, Michael Mooney and wife Angela, Saginaw, Texas and Daniel Mooney and wife Laurie, Plaquemine. He was preceded in death by parents, Lee and Betty Mooney; a sister, Judi Mooney Deshautelle and a brother, Edward Levert Mooney. Special thanks to Dr. Steven Zuckerman, Dr. Stephen Brierre, Angela Cunningham, the wonderful staff at the Bluebonnet General, Sherry Oliveto with the local ALS Association, and Matt Yglesias at Kleinpeter Physical Therapy, who helped to make the final days of his journey as comfortable as possible. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the local ALS Association or to the St. Vincent de Paul Fund at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plaquemine.
