Etta Mae Conerly Knowles, a native of Plaquemine and resident of Long Beach, Calif. passed away on June 21, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. She was the second of six children born to James and Louisa Conerly and reared in a Christian home. A graduate of Iberville High School, she moved to moved to California and married Vernon Knowles. She was a loyal employee of Long Beach Memorial Hospital for over 20 years and a faithful member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church of Long Beach under the leadership of Pastor Bynum. She truly enjoyed life, liked to watch basketball and football, traveling and camping, but most of all she loved to dance even if she didn’t have a partner. She met the changes and chances of life and the rough and smooth with a smile. She is survived by devoted children; one daughter, Sheila Knowles – Fletcher (Daniel) of Menifee, Calif.; two sons, Dewayne Knowles (Belinda) of Menifee, Calif. and Shawn Knowles (Crystal) of Riverside, Calif.; eleven grandchildren, Ashley, Christen, Noah, Nikinsha, Marquis, Erica, Fredrick, Brieana, Devonte, Shawn Jr., Kylan; seven great-grandchildren; Sean’na, Johnathan, Riley, Roan, King, Khristian and Kardel; one sister, Shirley James (Larry) of Port Allen; three brothers, James Conerly, Jr. of Gary, Ind., John Conerly (Gloria) of Compton, Calif., and Louis Conerly, Sr. (Deborah) of Plaquemine; two sisters-in-law, Elnora Knowles of Seal Beach, Calif. and Velma Knowles of Los Angeles, Calif.; Goddaughter niece Wanda Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including her special friend Robert Harvey and three dearest friends Gloria Butler, Yvonne Stewart and Diana Miller. Services entrusted to Simpson’s Family Mortuary located at 3443 W. Manchester Blvd. in Inglewood, Calif. Preceding her in death were her husband Vernon, sister Rosemary Conerly Travis and parents James and Louisa G. Conerly.
