SJHS, WCHS notch bi-district playoff volleyball victories last week

Local volleyball teams from St. John High and White Castle notched state bi-district volleyball playoff berths last week to advance to regional competition early this week (after PS SPORTS early deadline).

The two parish Division V volleyball clubs qualified for state playoff competition with strong power points out of their tough District 3 league, although neither club notched high honors. Ascension CHS won the district crown with Catholic of Pointe Coupee the runner-up. False River Academy joined SJHS and WCHS in the playoffs from the league ranks and joined with the Iberville duo in winning on the bi-district level last week.

St. John defeated Delcambre High in a hard-fought five-set battle by a 3-2 tally. White Castle swept West St. John High in three quick sets. False River swept South Plaquemines High in three sets as well.

The SJHS Lady Eagles (15th seed) were set to visit Episcopal School of Acadiana, the number two-seeded team in Division V, in the toughest of the district’s regional matches. White Castle (10th seed) drew district rival CHSPC (7th seed) on the road. False River (17th seed) was set to play top-seeded Country Day on the road. ACHS (4th seed) drew and first-round bye and was set to host 13th seed Northside Christian.

Winners of the regional games will advance to the state tournament in Kenner later this week.

St. John turned back visiting 18th seed Delcambre in a fierce battle in Plaquemine Thursday afternoon. The return of senior Francesca Louviere, who had been injured and out of several recent district game, was key to the playoff victory. Louviere turned in an outstanding 17-kill effort and she aggressively recorded 11 digs and added a pair of aces.

Sophomore Jessie Brown also played a key role for SJHS as she had 14 kills and matched Louviere with 11 digs and two aces. Senior Macy Williamson contributed six kills, eight blocks, and added an ace with her strong effort up at the net.

St. John won the first set 25-22 and the second by a 25-11 score. Delcambre rallied for wins of 27-25 and 25-21 to push the game into a final set. The Eagles won by a narrow 15-13 count.

The bi-district playoff win pushed Coach Chase Mancuso’s Lady Eagles to 18-15 overall and marked the second year in a row the school won a state playoff volleyball contest.

White Castle did away with visiting West St. John by set scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-16. Ronquel Gibson, another returned injured standout, had an all-around solid effort for the Lady Bulldogs with 15 assists, five digs, five aces, and a kill. Shylar O’Bear turned in an amazing 27 digs for WCHS, while Erica Jones added eight aces, five kills, and a pair of digs for the 20-10 overall Lady Bulldogs, who finished the regular season with the best volleyball record in the parish.
