PHS JUMPERS...Treveon Hawkins (44, left) and Jacorey Johnson (4, right) defy Belle Chasse defenders to take jump shots in a Plaquemine High hoop victory last week.

Plaquemine High’s Green Devils crawled their way to .500 ball early last week and then fell back to a game under by splitting their final two non-district boys’ basketball games last week.

PHS begins District 8-3A round ball Friday night at home by hosting Port Allen High.

The Green Devils reached .500 ball with a 10-10 record early last week with a 63-30 rout of Belle Chasse in a home contest. A couple of days later they traveled to fellow 3-A Patterson High and dropped a 55-40 game and fell to 10-11 as they entered the start of district play.

Against Belle Chasse at home, the locals coasted to the easy win with quarter margins of 12-6, 20-4, 17-10, and 14-10 by playing solid defense.

The combination of Treveon Hawkins on the inside and guard Jacorey Johnson on the perimeter and driving to the hoop sparked the offense. Hawkins finished with a game-high 24 points, while Johnson tossed in 16. Davon Godchaux chipped in 7, while Brandon Basil hit 6 points. Cordarro Pierce tallied 4, while Jesse Ward, Xavier Osborne, and Ricky Aro scored 2 apiece.

No one from Belle Chasse scored in double figures in the lopsided loss.

Plaquemine club hit the road last Thursday with high hopes of going a game over .500, but found Patterson’s Lumberjacks a tough host. The Jacks took first-half leads of 14-7 and 15-9 and then added a 12-9 advantage in the third stanza to coast to victory.

Hawkins led the PHS club with 14, while Ward netted 11. Johnson chipped in 6 and Godchaux 4 points. Dwayne Calloway and Osborne combined for 5 more PHS points in the loss. Rondo Williams paced Patterson with 13, while Donald Johnson tallied 10. Seven more Lumberjacks combined for 30 points, showing a balanced attack.
