PHS girls turn back Port Allen for 8-3A track crown
Plaquemine High pushed aside traditional track power and District 8-3A hostesses from Port Allen High to win this year’s crown Wednesday of last week.
The Lady Green Devils rolled up 147 points and qualified (top three finishers) in 17 of the 18 events at yesterday’s (Wednesday) regional track meet. PHS’ girls had several double qualifiers in events, two first and second place finishes, and two second and third place finishes.
Port Allen finished a strong second with 136 points as the Lady Pelicans and Lady Green Devils dominated the district meet. Brusly High was a distant third with 65 points, while the Livonia and St. James girls combined for only 13 points.
PHS was a powerhouse in the weight-throwing events. Ashley Smith won the shot put with a throw of 31-5, while Jairna Russ was second with a 30-1. Ashton O’Bear won the discus with a throw of 96-2, while Russ was second with a heave of 89-5.
Audreanna Marshall won the 400-meter dash with a time of (1:06), while Nariko Gillis provided a one-two punch with a second place in the event.
Marissa Batiste won the long jump with a leap of 16-8, while the 4 X 100 (51.05) and 4 X 400 (4:29) relay teams claimed district crowns. Batiste, Gillis, Marshall, and Brianna Arnold ran on the 4 X 400, while Batiste, Brianna and Brittany Arnold, and Myiesha Bell ran on the 4 X 100. The PHS 4 X 200 relay unit was second with a time of 1:48.
Batiste (12.69) and Brittany Arnold (12.79) were second and third in the 100-meter dash, while Brittany Arnold was third in the 200 (28.43).
Gillis was second in the 1600 (6:10), while Jamesshoulyn Fernandez was second in the 800 (2:52) and second in the 3200 (16:55).
Shatara West was second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.5) and second in the 300-meter hurdles (52.7).
Brianna Arnold was second in the triple jump with a leap of 32-2, while Kadijah Mims was second in the javelin with a heave of 91-6.
