18 Westbankers taking part in U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl this afternoon

Eighteen high school seniors from the westside region of the Baton Rouge Metro area are taking part this afternoon (Saturday, Dec. 17) in the annual U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl.

The showcase of uncommitted possible college football recruits has been moved for the first time from B.R. Olympia Stadium to Zachary High with a scheduled 2:30 p.m. kickoff.

Two squads will tangle in the special prep bowl game: The Black Knights and the Rough Riders.

Eight Iberville Parish players are taking part. Three from St. John High and two from Plaquemine High on the Black Knight squad and two from White Castle High and one from East Iberville on the Rough Riders.

Recent 1-A All-State first-team pick Da’vante Williams (RB-DB) leads the SJHS participants. Joining him are All-State honorable mentions Christian Primeaux (RB) and Chris Bordelon (center). Plaquemine High’s Deondre Philson (DB) and La Ren Phillips (DB) join the Eagle trio on the Black Knight roster.

Class 1-A All-State first-team pick Terrance Taylor (WR-DB) of White Castle leads the Rough Rider group. 2010 All-State pick Gerad Carlin (DL) is the other WCHS participant. Joining the Bulldog duo is East Iberville High two-time all-district standout Nicholas Brooks (RB-LB).

Brusly High has a pair of players joining Plaquemine’s five Black Knight squadmen. They are Jarred Allen (DE) and Sharodd Patterson (RB-WR).

Port Allen High has a trio of players on the Rough Rider squad. They are Lebeaux Cooper (DB), James Pollard (FB-LB), and Ricky Merritt (RB-WR). Livonia High has a pair in Mark Lewis (RB) and Xavier Joseph (OL-DL).

Donaldsonville has a trio playing on the Rough Rider team. They are Donaldsonville High’s Devon Breaux (QB-RB-DB), Tre’ Brown (RB-WR-DB), and Jovon Thompson (OL). Ascension Catholic High is represented by Robert Landry (K).

Ticket price is $10. The U.S. Army will have a youth interactive area, while the 101st Airborne will do a parachute jump to the 50-yard line. A gumbo cookoff began early this morning as well.
