All four parish boy hoop clubs notch early week victories

All four of the Iberville Parish boys prep basketball teams notched early week victories. Plaquemine, White Castle, and East Iberville all defeated upper classification opponents, while St. John topped a lower classification foe.

Here are the reports:

PHS 50, DUTCHTOWN 39: The Green Devils pushed their record to 10-1 Monday of last week with an 11-point road victory over 5-A host Dutchtown High.

PHS took an early 13-11 lead, but the hosting Griffins tied it up by intermission at 21-all. The hosts then pushed ahead by a 28-27 score after three periods. Enough was enough for the Green Devils. They rallied convincingly in the final stanza with a huge 23-11 scoring margin to win the contest.

Senior Jesse Ward and sophomore Davon Godchaux led the PHS offense with 16 points apiece. Demetrius Franklin Jr. netted 8 points, while Joshua Randall added 5. Jacorey Johnson and Deondre Philson combined for 5 more PHS markers.

Dutchtown (3-4 overall) used its outside shooting to forge their lead over the second and third periods. The Griffins bagged six buckets from 3-point range in the game.

PHS also won the JV game, garnering a 45-19 victory.

WCHS 61, ASSUMPTION 58: Playing 4-A Assumption yet again in the early season, the 1-A defending state champion White Castle boys took a narrow three-point victory Monday of last week on the road in Napoleonville.

The contest was a seesaw battle with both teams riding momentum swings. WC jumped out to a 21-11 lead by the end of the first period, but the hosting Mustangs rallied back with quarter margins of 19-15 and 19-13 to tie the game at 49-all at the start of the final period. The Bulldogs won it with a final 12-9 advantage.

Jarrian Jenkins paced the Bulldog scoring attack with 17, while Isaac O’Bear and Terrance Fair each collected 11 points, while the remainder of the players combined for 11 more.

Kyle Bernard led AHS with 26 points.

White Castle hit for five buckets from 3-point range in the victory. O’Bear had a pair, while Jenkins, Fair, and DeAndre Bellock had one apiece.

WCHS moved to 6-3 overall with the victory.

Assumption won the JV game by a 41-36 score.

ST. JOHN 65, HOPE ACADEMY 24: The Eagles hosted Hope Academy (previously Gables Academy) in a boys’ hoop game Tuesday of last week and rolled to an easy 65-24 victory.

The win upped the SJHS boys’ record to 3-6.

“We emptied the bench and let everyone play. They are a young team without a lot of depth,” noted Coach Chase Mancuso.

Senior guard Christian Primeaux led the Eagles with 11 points, while Da’vante Williams tallied 8 points in very limited court duty. Ben Poirrier had 7 points, while Chris Bordelon bucketed 6.

EAST IBERVILLE 50, ST. JAMES 45: The Tigers claimed a road victory Tuesday of last week over hosting 2-A St. James High by a five-point margin. The win boosted Coach Doug Schultz’s Tigers to 5-3 for the season and marked their fifth-straight win.

East wasted little time establishing their leadership on the court with a 15-8 advantage in the first period. They boosted the lead to 31-19 by halftime and coasted from there, despite allowing St. James a 14-9 run in the third period.

Richard Johnson, the only Tiger senior, and Jarrod Redditt led the way with 14 points apiece. Byron Clark chipped in 8 points, while Darryl Ingram had 7. Junius Chong added 5 and Braylon Bailey 2 points.

Joe Wiggins paced SJHS with 21 points.

St. James won the JV game by a 52-48 score.
