WHAT'S GOIN' ON? ... Green Devil Classic tips off Tuesday

WHAT EVENT: One of the top prep basketball tournaments will be held next week in Plaquemine as the PHS Green Devils host their annual Green Devil Classic at the Devil’s Den.

WHEN: The opening round of play will be this coming Tuesday (Dec. 27), followed by second round action Wednesday, third round elimination, and finally the championship finals with games beginning in the morning for seventh and fifth place honors, followed by Consolation, Third Place honors, and finally the title game at 7 p.m. all on Friday, Dec. 30.

TEAMS PLAYING: Host PHS, St. John and White Castle from Iberville Parish, 1-A West St. John, 2-A St. James, 3-A Amite, 4-A Assumption, 4-A Northside, 4-A Hammond, 5-A Thibodaux, 5-A Terrebonne, and 5-A Walker.

FIRST ROUND GAMES: The tourney opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday with Northside and Assumption tangling, followed at 5:30 p.m. by St. John and St. James, Plaquemine and West St. John at 7 p.m., and White Castle against Hammond at 8:30 p.m.

SECOND ROUND: Wednesday’s slate has PHS and White Castle opening games’ losers playing at 1 p.m., Northside and St. John opening games’ losers at 2:30 p.m. Winner of the Northside opening game plays Amite High at 4 p.m., followed by the winner of the St. John opening game against Terrebonne at 5:30 p.m., the winner of the PHS opening game against Walker at 7 p.m., and then the winner of the White Castle opening game against Thibodaux at 8:30 p.m.

The tourney will continue in double elimination format through Thursday with the final round games determination by Friday.

SPECIAL NOTE: Two of the teams in the tourney reached the state semifinals last year: 1-A state champion White Castle and Northside. Playoff teams also in the tourney field last year and in the Classic are hosting PHS, Hammond, and Assumption.
