Devils win third straight district matchup

The Green Devil defense held Woodlawn scoreless in the first half of the 45-16 district victory.

Plaquemine Green Devils shutout district rival Woodlawn 42-0 at the half in last week’s matchup before closing out the win with a final 45-16 score.

The Green Devils offense, led by speedster Wayne Toussant put up 21 points in each of the first two quarters of the tilt.

Toussant found the end zone on the third play from scrimmage on the opening Green Devil drive.  PHS held Woodlawn to a punt on the following drive, and quarterback Treyvon Leblanc found Toussant for a 60 yard bomb two plays later.  PHS led WHS 14-0 with just under nine minutes to play in the opening quarter.

After another Woodlawn punt, Leblanc passed to receiver Percy Butler for a 31-yard score to extend their lead 21-0.  Woodlawn punted again and PHS opened the second quarter with a 14-yard rushing score from running back Kevin Dominque on a 2nd and 9 play.

Standout safety Todd Harris picked off Woodlawn and returned the errant pass 32 yards to the Woodlawn five yard line.  Two plays later, Toussant found the end zone for a third time and extended the PHS lead 35-0 with over 11 minutes to play in the second quarter.

The final Green Devil touchdown of the game was a 35 yard pass from Leblanc to receiver Kevin Dominque.

The second half was all defense for Woodlawn and Plaquemine as the Devils put up just three more points in the victory.

Thailand Favoroth, Herb Thomas, Michael Sproles and Dontavion Wicks steered the Green Devil ship to victory in the final minutes of the game.

Dominque led in rushing yards with 75 and a score.  Herb Thomas totaled 33, Wayne Toussant totaled 21 and two scores.

Quarterback Leblanc totaled 152 yards through the air for three scores.  Toussant led in receiving yards with 62 and a score, followed by Percy Butler at 44 and a score and Kevin Dominque at 35 and a score.

Dominque leads the Devils in rushing yards on the season with 1,125 yards and 14 scores.  Toussant follows with 245 and six scores.  Toussant leads the team in receiving yards on the year with 401 and seven scores, Michael Sproles with 220 and a score, Butler with 195 and two scores and Dominque with 128 and a score.

The Devils now sport a 5-3 overall record and are 3-0 in district play.  They host rival Tara Friday, Oct. 28 and close out the season on the road at Belaire Friday, Nov. 4.
