Plaquemine Lady Green Devils are peaking at the right time, according to head girl’s basketball coach Brannon Dillon.

The Lady Green Devils began district play January 10 when they hit the road to take on district rival St. Michael and came out victorious 48-39.  The Lady Green Devils handed the St. Michael Warriors their first district loss since 2011.

Senior Kiffani Young lead the way for PHS with 19 points, followed by Carleisha Stevens at 11, Shakira Wicks with seven.  Breanna Dillon racked up the most rebounds with 11, Young followed with eight and Wicks with six.  Tyrielle Watkins totaled four assists, and Wicks totaled three.

After conquering the district giant, the Lady Green Devils returned home to host rival Livonia Wildcats.  Coach Dillon and the Lady Devils won 45-39 to lead district 6-4A 2-0.

After a bit of a sluggish start, the ladies battled through their adversity to change the momentum of the game in the middle of the third quarter and propel the team to victory.

Young lead in scoring again with 13 points, Wicks and Steven each followed with 10 and Dillon with seven.  Young capped off a double-double performance with 12 rebounds, Dillon followed with 11 and Stevens with seven.

Eager to continue their district streak, PHS hit the road to take on Woodlawn B.R. and walloped the Lady Panthers 42-24.  The Lady Devils capped off their four-game win streak with another blowout victory, this time over district rival Tara 64-26 on January 20.

“As the girls continue to accept their roles on the team and the effort is there, we should be a real force in the coming games,” coach Dillon said.  “We are still holding at #21 in the ranking.  One of our goals this season was to win our district and we feel very confident that we could accomplish that goal.”

The Lady Green Devils look to continue their district winning streak this week when they hit the road to take on Belaire and head for a rematch with St. Michael.
