Lady Eagles win third district matchup
St. John Lady Eagles won their first district game after 34 straight district losses on Jan. 10 at East Iberville. Since then, the Lady Eagles earned their third district victory within the month.
SJHS followed up on their initial victory with a win over district rival Ascension Catholic a week later on the road, 59-21.
The Lady Eagle district winning streak briefly came to an end, however, after the team was blown out at home against rival Southern Lab, 26-78. SJHS hoped to bounce back after the loss when they hit the road against Ascension Christian, but came up just short in a 44-55 loss.
The Lady Eagles followed up with one of their best efforts on the season and defeated rival Kentwood at home 57-41.
“We finally made some shots and free throws,” head coach Cindy Prouty said. “My girls played very hard the whole game. That’s what we’ve been missing, a total game effort.”
The total game effort garnered the third district victory for the Lady Eagles after a three season district drought.
Grace Robichaux lead the Lady Eagles in scoring with 23 points and shot at 62 percent. SJHS lead Kentwood 28-19 at the half and kept full court pressure on the visiting Lady Kangaroos.
Prouty kept her starting five in most of the game and played only seven players throughout the matchup. J’Nyria Kelly, a seventh grader, and Elise Jackson came off the bench to support the big five.
Starters Elizabeth Bueche, Hannah Hargrove, Hannah Alexander, Robbi Seneca and Grace Robichaux hope to continue their winning ways this week when they host parish rivals White Castle and East Iberville.
