Lady Devils face slow start with loaded roster
Plaquemine Lady Green Devils and head coach Hunter Markins are facing an 0-4 start to the season, but with seven seniors at the helm they should be able to turn things around quickly.
Senior Madison Hebert returned to the mound this year with senior Hope Spencer at catcher. Madison has already racked up a pair of homeruns this season and Hope snagged one of her own.
Senior shortstop Caroline Zeringue also returned to the field for her final year and has been an outstanding leader to freshman lead off hitter and third baseman Claire Blanchard, according to Markins.
“Claire is a very talented, young and fearless girl,” Markins said. “I look for her to be a big part of continuing to grow our PHS softball program.”
Senior Haley Landry, who played third base in 2016, will take on a new role at second this year to free up senior Amber Granger to play centerfield.
Granger joins senior Emily Falencki (left field) in the outfield. Falencki sports the highest batting average on the team. “It’s hard to get a ball to fall on the ground on the left side,” Markins said.
Rounding out the senior group is DH Eltonia Martin, who also has tacked on a homerun this season with six RBIs.
It has been a tough start for the loaded group, but coach Markins is confident in this year’s team.
The Lady Devils also have a new face on the coaching staff this season: veteran coach Cricket Crockett, who assists alongside Angelle Matherne.
The Lady Devils lost two games by big margins earlier this season, to West Feliciana, 0-9, and to Berwick, 10-20. They lost a nailbiter against Maurepas last week, 4-2 and will hit the road to turn things around at Assumption and at home against Cecilia this week.
“We will be mentally tough and physically tough by the time district comes around, and hopefully our bats will peak at the right time,” Markins said. “Timing is everything in this sport, but at the end of the day I expect no less than to be the first PHS softball team to make it to the state playoffs in Sulphur.”
