St. John Lady Eagles and head coach Cindy Prouty have officially begun their 2017 campaign.  The Lady Eagles have four pitchers this season after losing senior Kyndal Guilory from the mound.

Prouty has dubbed seniors Monica Rivet and Grace Acosta, junior Samantha Landry and freshman Grayson Schnebelen as this year’s pitching line-up.  Sarah Grace Lobue has taken over at catching duties after losing Payton Passantino to graduation in the off-season.

St. John hosted a season-opening scrimmage against parish rival Plaquemine High and came away with a 11-3 victory.  Kelsey Leblanc, Grace Acosta and Kaylee Sadden each racked up a trio of hits in the win.  Leblanc also totaled a pair of RBIs.

Mckenzie Richard racked up four RBIs, and Monica Rivet and Grayson Schnebelen both pitched in the win.  Rivet racked up 15 first pitch strikes and Grayson totaled four strikeouts.

St. John hit a bit of a sluggish start after the win, however, after falling on the road to False River 0-9, and losing their first two games of the regular season to Maurepas, 4-6, and St. Michael, 11-12.

Kaylee Sadden racked up a pair of hits in the loss to Maurepas, Madison Young totaled two RBIs.  Rivet took to the mound in the loss and threw 15 first pitch strikes and racked up six strike-outs.

Grace Acosta and Elise Jackson each totaled a trio of hits in the loss to St. Michael.  They both also racked up a trio of RBIs.

Acosta pitched in the loss and led with 19 first strike pitches and five strikeouts.  Grayson closed out the final two innings and totaled three strikeouts in the loss.

“We will only be as good as our pitching,” head coach Cindy Prouty said.  “Defensively we have to get better.  Our first two games we made too many mistakes.

“We will need to play good defense and have timely hitting to win.  I like our chances though.  We have the talent, we just need to put it all together.”

The Lady Eagles hope to bounce back this week when they host Doyle, travel to take on St. Michael and compete in the St. Amant tournament this weekend.
