St. John Lady Eagles are knocking at Ascension Catholic’s door for the first place spot in district 6-1A play.

SJHS would be sitting comfortably at 5-0, but lost a nailbiter at home to ACHS on March 9, 4-5.  On Thursday, the Lady Eagles were looking to keep pace with ACHS atop 6-1A, but they needed to hit the road and earn a win at Ascension Christian.

SJHS defeated the Lady Lions in their first go-round at home on March 10, 4-3.  Thursday, thanks to an early 4-0 lead and some stellar pitching from Monica Rivet, the Lady Eagles swept the Ascension Christian series with a 6-2 victory in game two.

Both teams blanked the first inning of the district matchup, but the Lady Eagles jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a nice set-up from Alise Wille and Kaylee Sadden.

Rivet held the Lady Lions scoreless through the first three innings, but AC put one run on the board in each of the fourth and fifth.  The Lady Lions tacked on two more runs in the sixth thanks to an inside-the-park homerun from Samantha Landry.

Rivet blanked the Lady Lions in each of the sixth and seventh innings and halted any AC chance at closing the gap with a clutch double-play in the sixth.

Madison Young and Kaylee Sadden each racked up a pair of hits in the win, Wille snagged one.  Wille also totaled a pair of RBIs, Landry and Young each totaled one.

Rivet pitched all seven innings for the Lady Eagles and earned 17 first pitch strikes and four strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles are currently 4-1 in district 6-1A and trail Ascension Catholic by half a game at 4-0.

“I think we let the game here versus Ascension Catholic get away from us,” head coach Cindy Prouty said.  “But we are playing much better ball right now.  If we can just keep this level of play up we will give ourselves a chance of at least sharing the district title.

“But we have to go there and they are a good team so we will have to play well to win.  Yesterday (Thursday) was a good test for us.  Ascension Christian is much better this year and if they still have a game left versus Ascension Catholic we might even have a chance of taking the title back.”

They will look to flip the script when they hit the road to take on the district leader on Tuesday.
