Lady Eagles pummel Lady Tigers, finish second in 6-1A
St. John Lady Eagles have officially finished second overall in District 6-1A after handing parish rival East Iberville Tigers a 20-0 shutout defeat.
Before SJHS hit the road to take on EIHS, they had to finish a couple of non-district games first.
The Lady Eagles took on Assumption and Maurepas in hopes of increasing their chances at a higher playoff seeding.
The Lady Eagles hosted Assumption and came away with a shutout 10-0 win after five innings. Grace Acosta was the team’s lead hitter with three, followed by Kelsey Leblanc and Kaylee Sadden each with two. Alise Wille and Mckenzie Richard each earned two RBIs, Monica Rivet took one. Rivet pitched all five innings for the Lady Eagles and earned 14 first pitch strikes and one strikeout.
After the win, the Lady Eagles hit the road to take on Maurepas in a non-district tilt but came up shy 1-4. The Lady Eagles put up their one run in the top of the second, but could not close the gap on the Maurepas lead. Rivet pitched in the loss and earned 17 first pitch strikes and a pair of strikeouts.
SJHS looked to finish strong in 6-1A play last Thursday and came away with their sixth district victory of the season after a 20-0 shutout win over East Iberville after three innings.
Grayson Schnebelen and Mckenzie Richard were the team’s leaders at the plate with a pair of hits and three RBIs a piece. Grace Acosta earned a pair of RBIs.
Samantha Landry and Monica Rivet split pitching duties and each earned four first pitch strikes. Landry racked up four strikeouts and Rivet with two.
With the win over East Iberville, the Lady Eagles finished second overall in 6-1A just behind 8-0 leader Ascension Catholic.
“I’m not happy about finishing second,” head coach Cindy Prouty said. “But who would be? I truly feel like we have a better team, but it just didn’t happen for us.
“We didn’t hit like we are capable. Not sure if we will see them again this year, but if we do I know things will be different.”
