Plaquemine Lady Green Devils closed out their regular season with a 7-4 victory over St. Scholastica ahead of their LHSAA 4A playoff appearance.

PHS opened the top of the first with one run that was quickly matched by the Covington team in the bottom of the second.

Both teams blanked the third inning, but the Lady Devils ran the table in the top of the fourth with three runs.  Pitcher Madison Hebert and the Lady Devils blanked the home team in four straight innings before they tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh.

St. Scholastica put up three runs of their own in the seventh in an effort to close the gap, but came up short giving PHS the 7-4 victory.

Caroline Zeringue, Hope Spencer and Madison Hebert each racked up a pair of hits in the win.  Hebert was the team’s RBI leader with three, followed by Spencer with two.

Hebert pitched all seven innings for the Lady Devils and racked up 17 first pitch strikes and three strikeouts.

Last week, LHSAA released their playoff brackets for the Class 4A postseason and gave the Lady Devils the No. 18 overall seed.

PHS will hit the road on Monday, April 17 to take on No. 15 seed Tioga.

“I know everyone thinks we are a big underdog and have no chance in making it to Sulphur,” head coach Hunter Markins said, “but my girls have bought in to the program.

“We believe they are capable of beating any team in the state when we are on our game.  If we make the routine plays on defense, execute in bunting situations, and one of the big four can hit a long ball with runners on base we should be able to compete at a high level today and throughout the playoffs.”
