Haughton’s Bockhaus wins week 31 top athlete vote

Haughton softball standout Brooklynn Bockhaus came out the victor in the 32nd Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.
The Lady Bucs shortstop and her supporters were able to post 23,227 votes (42.7 percent) of the 54,428 votes cast in the weekly poll. She managed to slip past Airline baseball standout Will Tynes, who received an impressive 19,787 votes (36.4 percent).
The sophomore has started at shortstop for two straight seasons for coach Leanne Prather and had a .357 average with one homer this year when her season was cut short by the COVID-19 restrictions. Last year as a freshman, she hit .375 with three homers and 32 RBI.
“Brooklynn is the type of athlete any coach would be proud to have,” Prather said. “She is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching. She is an excellent leader on and off the field. Her desire and effort to get even a fraction better each day is admirable and something we should all strive to imitate.”
Bockhaus carries a 4.1 GPA and already has earned a Division I softball offer. She is also a cheerleader at Haughton.
Others on the 32nd ballot of the school year were Bailey Layton (Calvary softball), Addy Parker (Northwood softball), Graham Mayeaux (Loyola baseball), CJ Watts (Lakeside baseball), Kristin Chester (Huntington cheer), Claire White (Byrd track), Courtney Johnson (North DeSoto track), Erin Campbell (Loyola track), Bailee Elliott (Parkway bowling), Jacoby Snell (Minden bowling) and Cameron Cason (Caddo Magnet gymnastics).
Bockhaus becomes the first Haughton athlete to win the AOW poll.
The student-athletes were chosen because their names were submitted by their coach.
The poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football. Each weekly winner receives an “Athlete of the Week” backpack, courtesy of The Times, the SBSC and BSN Sports.
The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
