Boise State DC Jeff Schmedding joins Auburn football staff as inside linebackers coach
The Tigers' new coach announced Saturday that Jeff Schmedding will work under defensive coordinator Derek Mason as inside linebackers coach and defensive run-game coordinator for the Tigers.
It is not immediately clear what that means for Travis Williams, who has coached linebackers at his alma mater since 2016. Schmedding is the sixth assistant Harsin has hired, which means he still has four more spots to fill on his staff.
“When you look at the defenses Coach Schmedding coordinated in Boise, they were championship caliber, so I know the work ethic and preparation he brings every single day,” Harsin said. “He is a veteran presence on this staff that makes others around him better. The versatility he brings with the linebackers and connecting the attacking middle of our Auburn defense will complement the vision of Coach Mason as a whole.”
Schmedding spent the past two seasons as Boise State's defensive coordinator as well as inside linebackers coach. Prior to that, the Spokane, Washington, native spent 15 years at his alma mater Eastern Washington (2004-18), including the last three as defensive coordinator.
“I want to thank Coach Harsin for the opportunity to be a part of his staff at Auburn,” Schmedding said. “My family and I are very humbled and honored to be a part of such a great university like Auburn. I’m excited to get to work and make the Auburn family proud.”
Boise State's defense finished ranked 31st nationally, holding opponents to 21.9 points per game during Schmedding's first season in 2019. Among the players he coached was hybrid defensive end/linebacker Curtis Weaver, who was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year after ranking fifth nationally with 13½ sacks.
That unit ranked 15th nationally limiting opposing rushers to fewer than 3.5 yards per carry.
Schmedding will have a strong group of inside linebackers to work with at Auburn, which is slated to return starters Zakoby McClain and Owen Pappoe as well as a trio of four-star freshmen in Cam Riley, Wesley Steiner and Desmond Tisdol.
He's the second defensive assistant Harsin has hired to coach under Mason, along with cornerbacks coach Zac Etheridge.
