BATON ROUGE - LSU shortstop Alex Bregman was named Monday as the National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America magazine.

The honor marked the third such award for Bregman, who was named National Freshman Player of the Year last month by Collegiate Baseball magazine and by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Bregman, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., helped lead LSU to the 2013 College World Series, batting .369 in with 18 doubles, seven triples, six homers, 52 RBI, 59 runs and 16 stolen bases. He finished No. 2 in the nation with 104 base hits on the year.

Bregman is the fifth LSU player to earn a National Freshman of the Year designation, joining second baseman Todd Walker (1992), pitcher Brett Laxton (1993), second baseman Mike Fontenot (2000) and pitcher Lane Mestepey (2001).
