Grant Gunnell was declared a "full-go" by Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield on Monday. But Saturday night, the junior quarterback was in shorts at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Gunnell did not play as true freshman Seth Henigan started the Tigers' win at Nicholls State. Silverfield  said after the game that Gunnell visited a doctor for an undisclosed injury after getting through Tuesday's practice.

Silverfield said Henigan will start next week against Arkansas State.

"I don't foresee (Grant) being ready in the next couple of weeks," Silverfield said.

After transferring from Arizona in December, Gunnell was one of the leading candidates to take over at quarterback. He took first-team reps during preseason practice but on Aug. 18, Gunnell was not seen during open periods.

He was listed as "day-to-day" according to a Memphis spokesperson and returned to practice two days later. However, Silverfield declined to name a starting quarterback over the final two weeks leading to the season opener.

Gunnell and Henigan were both listed as the starter on the team's depth chart. Silverfield said that once Gunnell visited a doctor, it was clear Henigan would start the season opener.

Henigan was 19-of-32 for 265 yards and led the Tigers on nine scoring drives without a single punt.
