Penny Hardaway recruiting update: Memphis set to host former Kansas St. F/C Isaiah Maurice
Hours after securing the commitment of Cordova star Tyler Harris, the Memphis men's basketball team will be hosting at least one more prospective member of next year's roster.
Forward Isaiah Maurice of South Plains Junior College is expected to take an official campus visit this weekend as coach Penny Hardaway and his staff continue their efforts to provide the program with immediate reinforcements for the 2018-19 season and beyond.
Maurice spent two years at Kansas State, redshirting his first season before averaging 8.8 minutes and 3.0 points per game as a redshirt freshman during the 2016-17 campaign. He was then dismissed from Kansas State last June due to a violation of team rules.
Maurice played at South Plains (Texas) this past season, averaging 12.9 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 48.5 percent from 3-point range. Listed at 6-foot-10, he had 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench when South Plains won the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game last month.
Maurice, who is a Durham, N.C., native, committed to New Mexico last December. But the Lobos then received a commitment Friday from junior college big man prospect Karim Ezzedinne of Northwest Florida State College.
Maurice is currently rated No. 50 in the jucorecruiting.com top 100 rankings for the 2018 recruiting class.
Hardaway said last week he hopes to add at least one more post player to next year's team, and Maurice could fill one of those slots. With East point guard Alex Lomax, Hardaway's son, Jayden, and Harris now in the fold as recruits, Memphis has three available scholarships left to use ahead of Hardaway's first campaign as head coach.
But he'll also get a chance to speak to some potential pieces for the future in the coming days.
Hardaway is reportedly slated to conduct an in-home visit with New Jersey-based teammates Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis on Sunday. He will also meet with forward Matthew Hurt of Minnesota and forward Trendon Watford of Birmingham, Ala., at their homes next week.
All four players are considered five-star recruits and among the top 15 overall prospects in the 2019 class by most major recruiting services. They each also have ties to Mike Miller, who is expected to be officially announced as an assistant coach under Hardaway soon.
The Tigers have eight open scholarships heading into the 2019-20 season, which is why Hardaway is planning for a huge haul in the 2019 recruiting class.
