Ragin' Cajuns coach Billy Napier has questions to answer at Sun Belt football Media Day
NEW ORLEANS – UL football coach Billy Napier is scheduled to speak about the Ragin’ Cajuns’ 2021 season at 4 p.m. Thursday during the Sun Belt Conference’s football Media Day at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel.
Offensive lineman Max Mitchell and defensive lineman Zi’Yon Hill will accompany Napier.
UL finished ranked 16th in the final USA TODAY coaches poll.
Here are some questions Napier likely will face:
How can the Cajuns handle the hype after nearly running the table in 2020, losing only to Coastal Carolina?
UL, scheduled to open Sept. 4 at Texas, was picked to win the Sun Belt West Division by nine of 10 conference coaches.
No. 2 QB competition
Does Chandler Fields, who shared backup duties last year, still have a leg up in the battle to be UL’s No. 2 quarterback behind starter Levi Lewis?
Fresno State transfer Ben Wooldridge was the most impressive new quarterback during spring practice, standing out among a group also including Maryland transfer Lance LeGendre and high school signees Zy McDonald and Hunter Herring. But it’s unknown if Fields, the only reserve with game experience in UL’s system, did enough in the offseason to retain his edge.
Running back battle
Emani Bailey had a strong spring, but T.J. Wisham, Michael Orphey Jr. and former Texas A&M running back Jacob Kibodi all should compete when preseason practice opens in early August.
After keeping a tight lid on offseason developments, are all of the many Cajuns coming off injuries healthy?
A long list includes Wishman, starting inside linebackers Ferrod Gardner and Lorenzo McCaskill, outside linebackers Chauncey Manac and Tyler Guidry, and receivers Peter LeBlanc, Jalen Williams, Jamal Bell and Calif Gossett.
After an offseason spent growing accustomed to the Napier way, which newcomers can contribute?
