Bold predictions for Billy Napier and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team in 2021
The UL football team opens Saturday at No. 19 Texas.
Here are some bold predictions on how the No. 23 Ragin’ Cajuns will fare in 2021:
UL finally wins Sun Belt title game
The Cajuns lost the first two Sun Belt Conference championship games, falling in 2018 and 2019 at Appalachian State. They had another shot last season, but it was canceled because of Coastal Carolina’s COVID-19 outbreak.
This is the year UL finally breaks through – and it does it at home.
Cajuns beat Coastal Carolina
UL and No. 24 Coastal aren’t scheduled to play. But, unlike last season, when Coastal won at Cajun Field, the Cajuns will beat the Chanticleers this year anyway – this time in a Sun Belt title game that does get played.
Chris Smith goes crazy
Stepping into UL’s No. 1 running back role, Chris Smith becomes the Cajuns’ first 1,200-yard rusher since NFL back Elijah McGuire had 1,264 in 2014. Oh, and Smith returns three kickoffs for touchdowns – one more than he had last year.

Billy Napier leaves the building
Billy Napier works his final season as Cajuns coach, finally seizing one of those Power 5 opportunities he’s previously spurned. Napier does it quick, too, and isn’t around long enough to personally take UL to its fourth straight bowl game.
