Tennessee football assistants Brian Niedermeyer, Shelton Felton fired for cause
On Monday, Niedermeyer was one of two Vols assistant coaches fired for cause along with Pruitt after an internal investigation.
Niedermeyer, Tennessee's ace recruiter and inside linebackers coach, and outside linebackers coach Shelton Felton were both axed. Pruitt was fired earlier Monday and athletics director Phillip Fulmer is retiring. Fulmer made the decision to step down, and his departure is not tied to the investigation.
Seven staff members were also fired. Knox News obtained the termination letters for director of player personnel Danny Stiff, assistant director of player personnel J.T. Hill, directors of recruiting Rachel Bell and Bethany Gunn, assistant directors of recruiting Chantryce Boone and Taylar Hooker and offensive analyst/quality control coach Larry Harold.
UT Chancellor Donde Plowman and president Randy Boyd cited “a significant number of serious NCAA rules violations” as the reason for the terminations.
Niedermeyer was the tight ends coach for his first two seasons at Tennessee. He spent the 2020 season coaching inside linebackers. His contract was set to expire Jan. 31.
He gained a raise and extension in July 2019 after he was named the 247Sports national recruiter of the year.
JEREMY PRUITT'S RESPONSE:Coach's lawyer says firing was 'orchestrated effort' by Tennessee
Niedermeyer was the primary recruiter for offensive lineman Darnell Wright and linebackers Henry To’o To’o and Quavaris Crouch — three of UT’s top four signees in the 2019 class.
Niedermeyer and quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke were the only two remaining holdovers from Pruitt's initial assistant coach group after offensive line coach Will Friend left for South Carolina. Friend since bolted for Auburn.
Felton was a quality control analyst at Tennessee during the 2018 season. He went on the road recruiting leading into the early signing period after Tyson Helton left the Vols for the Western Kentucky head coach job.
Felton left Tennessee after one season to take the outside linebackers coaching job at Akron, where he reunited with former Chattanooga coach Tom Arth. Felton was hired as the outside linebackers coach at Tennessee after Chris Rumph left for the Houston Texans.
