Tennessee football's 2022 schedule released, including a switch from Army to Akron
Tennessee football's 2022 schedule was announced Tuesday, including a nonconference opponent switch and the Vols' first trip to LSU in 12 years.
The Vols will host Akron on Sept. 17 instead of Army, which was scheduled as UT's third nonconference game.
UT is taking a $100,000 loss to make the switch. Tennessee was slated to pay Army $1.4 million, but will instead pay $500,000 to cancel the agreement. UT is paying Akron $1 million. UT and Akron agreed to the game in February.
Tennessee's game against Army will not be rescheduled and the process to drop the game started under former athletics director Phillip Fulmer and former coach Jeremy Pruitt, a UT spokesperson told Knox News.
The Army game was scheduled in May 2016 under former AD Dave Hart.
Tennessee opens SEC play by hosting Florida on Sept. 24. The Vols play at LSU on Oct. 8 as the Tigers are UT's SEC West rotating opponent for the season.
Tennessee has not played at LSU since 2010, when UT lost 16-14. The Vols have an 8-4-2 record in Baton Rouge. UT lost 30-10 to the Tigers in Knoxville in 2017, the teams' most recent meeting.
Tennessee opens its 2022 season against Ball State on Sept. 3. The Vols play at Pittsburgh on Sept. 10 and host UT Martin on Oct. 22.
