South Carolina football injury update: Four starters questionable vs. Georgia Bulldogs
COLUMBIA — Four South Carolina football starters are questionable for the Gamecocks' matchup against No. 2 Georgia at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday (noon, ESPN).
South Carolina (1-1, 0-1 SEC) entered preparation for Georgia (2-0, 0-0) already down two defensive starters after edge rusher Jordan Strachan and linebacker Mohamed Kaba were ruled out for the season with ACL injuries sustained in a 44-30 loss at Arkansas last Saturday. Three of the four questionable players are on the defense.
Shane Beamer said nickelback Cam Smith, defensive lineman Alex Huntley and safety RJ Roderick are dealing with minor injuries, and their status is undecided for the Georgia game. Roderick was injured on the first drive of the season opener against Georgia State, while Huntley and Smith sustained injuries against Arkansas.
"We've got a good plan, and obviously we've got to be flexible and creative with what we do defensively if we have some guys out," Beamer said. "It just means that some of our younger guys ... they've got to continue to get better. It certainly affects our depth, and we've got to continue to bring these young freshmen along to develop the depth on defense ... We're not where we need to be overall as a program right now from a depth standpoint, but we're getting there."
Smith, a preseason All-American, has what Beamer described as a "upper body injury." His backup at nickelback, David Spaulding, is also questionable with an undisclosed injury. Defensive coordinator Clayton White said Wednesday that defensive back Marcellus Dial is the likely starter at nickel if Smith and Spaulding are ruled out.
Wide receiver Corey Rucker remains questionable after missing the first two games with an undisclosed injury. Rucker transferred from Georgia State.
The Bulldogs are not completely healthy either, with cornerback Nyland Green and receiver Adonai Mitchell unlikely to play Saturday.
