St. Michael sweeps Green Devils to open district

PLAQUEMINE – St. Michael the Archangel jumped out to a four-run first inning lead and cruised to a 9-0 victory and sweep of Plaquemine to open District 6-4A play on Thursday afternoon at Joe Distefano Park.
The Green Devils (8-5, 0-2), under coach Scott Allen, also fell to University High-B.R. 7-2 on Saturday. Plaquemine travels to Tara Thursday after hosting the Trojans Tuesday and host Port Allen Saturday and Broadmoor Tuesday.
"We are just young and making young mistakes," Allen said. "I just wish we would have handled the situations better. We are the type of baseball team that hangs their hat on pitching and defense and it has not helped us these past two games.
"They were going to hit the ball obviously, but they should have not scored nine runs. We just made some stupid errors, which is really frustrating with the time we spend out here."
Christopher Reid got the win for St. Michael (15-6, 2-1) striking out three over four innings. Reid also was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
James Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Wade Broussard (double, three RBIs) and John Thomas Mauldin (two RBIs) were each 1-for-3.
Joseph Keller took the loss for Plaquemine walking three over three innings. Ben Cavalier struck out four in four innings of relief.
Brian Jordan was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Green Devils. Austin LeJeune, Chris Cox and Dalton Brigalia each had one hit.
Broussard's three-run double put St. Michael ahead 4-0 in the first inning.
Catcher Cox turned a double play from Keller to first baseman Derek Sanchez in the second inning.
Brigalia's infield campfire loaded the bases in the bottom half after Ethan King was hit by a pitch but they were left stranded.
Smith and Maulden's RBI singles made it 7-0 in the fourth after Kyle Cannatella's RBI-single in the third.
Jordan beat out a grounder in the fifth and Cavalier was hit by a pitch but Plaquemine couldn't scratch across a run.
The Green Devils put runners in scoring position again in the seventh when Jordan dropped a hit in front of center and Cavalier followed.
Smith got the win Thursday and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mauldin (home run, three RBIs) and Brennan Ostrom were each 2-for-3 at the plate.
