Green Devils sweep district series from Broadmoor

PLAQUEMINE– Plaquemine High School swept a District 6-4A doubleheader with Broadmoor 9-5, 11-0 on Tuesday at Joe Distefano Park.

The Green Devils (13-7, 3-3), under coach Scott Allen, also rebounded from a 3-1 loss to St. John of Plaquemine Saturday to defeat False River Academy 10-5 on Tuesday. Plaquemine hosts Livonia Saturday before traveling to Lutcher Tuesday.

“The sweep was important,” Allen said. “We played well and the boys responded like we hoped they would. Our goal is to continue to take one game at a time and treat the next game as the most important.”

Ben Cavalier picked up the win in the first game striking out 10 over seven innings while allowing just two hits and walking one.

Joesph Keller earned the win in the second game striking out seven over five inning while allowing just one hit.

Julius Maracalin went 6-for-6 over the two games with a home run, double and five RBIs while Ethan King was 3-for-5 in both games.

Austin LeJeune was 2-for-3 in the second game with one RBI. Cavalier was 1-for-4 in the first game.

Ryan Sibley took the loss in the first game for Broadmoor and Oni Robertson got the defeat in the second game. Robertson was 2-for-6 over the two games with three RBIs.

Plaquemine jumped out to an early 9-0 lead through four innings of the first game. Maracalin and King each singled in the first inning while Keller, LeJeune and Francisco Gonzales each drew walks and Cavalier reached on an error as the Green Devils posted four runs.  

Cavalier led off the bottom of the third with a single and Maracalin reached on an error. LeJeune and Gonzales’ sacrifice flys each scored runs to make it 6-0.

The Green Devils added three runs in the fourth. Maracalin hit an RBI-single after Keller drew a walk. King sandwiched a single around walks to Gonzales, Dalton Brigalia and Brian Jordan to push the lead to 9-0.

Broadmoor countered with five runs in the fifth but Cavalier struck out four of the final seven batters he faced.

Maracalin smashed a double to the right gap in the second inning of the second game but was left stranded. Second baseman LeJeune turned a double play from shortstop Gonzales to first baseman Derek Sanchez to end the bottom half.

King lined to the center of the infield to  lead off the third and Chris Cox drew a bases loaded walk to crack the scoreboard in the third. Cavalier’s sacrifice added a run before Maracalin lined through the center of the infield to make it 3-0.

Plaquemine, which totaled nine hits, exploded for eight runs in the fourth to end the game.

The Green Devils scored eight runs in the second inning and cruised over False River.

Brigalia picked up the win on the mound. Keller was 2-for-2, while Sanchez was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Michael Davis was 1-for-1.

Brandon Deville took the loss for False River. David Leonard and Blake Fulmer were each  2-for-4 at the plate, while Chase Reed was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
