St. John's Dylan Hurst named to All-State team
St. John pitcher Dylan Hurst had a special senior season for the Eagles as he helped lead them to a district title and a trip to the postseason.
His year just got a little more exceptional as he was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State team. Hurst was a second-team selection.
Hurst was the only 1A parish player—baseball or softball—to make the LSWA All-State squad.
St. John had a tremendous regular season that saw them finish 18-10.
Of the 10 Eagles losses, nine were to upper-classification teams. Their lone loss against 1A competition was a 5-3 defeat to district foe Ascension Christian.
St. John began the season at just 2-5, with losses to powers Brusly and Episcopal. However, the Eagles caught fire down the stretch and went 16-5 to finish the season.
St. John was able to win the District 6-1A championship as they finished the league schedule 9-1.
In capturing the title, the Eagles were able to beat defending champion Ascension Catholic twice. In their second meeting, with Hurst on the mound, St. John dominated with an emphatic 14-4 victory.
With such immense momentum, St. John headed into the Division IV playoffs as the No. 7 seed, but they were upset by eventual state semifinalist Houma Christian in the opening round.
In addition to being named second-team All-State, Hurst was named the District 6-1A MVP.
