PLAQUEMINE – Plaquemine rebounded from an early week loss to University High to defeat Redemptorist 66-61 on Friday and Pointe Coupee Central 55-53 in overtime on Saturday in the Plaquemine Roundball Classic.

The Green Devils (5-2) fell to the Cubs 58-54 on Tuesday and led at halftime of both Roundball Classic games 29-25 and 27-24.

"We are still looking for scoring opportunities from some other guys," Plaquemine coach Kirby Loupe said. "We have some experience and beef in the post but we are playing with a lot of younger guys on the perimeter."

Davon Godchaux led the Green Devils with 15 points against University. Devante Marshall added 10, Jamie Lawless nine, Louis Conerly seven, Deon Harding five, Justin Randall four, Charleston Spears three and Clifton Young two.

Henry Shortess had a game-high 22 points for the Cubs. Wayde Sims added 11 and Skylar Mays and Jalen Johnson each had 10.

University closed out the first quarter on a 9-3 run after Harding's putback and dish to Godchaux put Plaquemine ahead early. Marshall's 18-footer just before the buzzer cut it to 15-9 going into the second quarter.

Shortess' 3-pointer from the left wing put University up 30-20 at halftime after Godchaux's putback and Young's inside basket cut the deficit to five.

"We didn't come out and follow the game plan that we wanted in the first half," Loupe said. "We spent all our energy in the second half trying to climb back in it but we just couldn't make that one play to get us over the hump. We have to learn from this and move on."

Lawless' first of three 3-pointers cut it to 32-29 but Shortess answered with his own. Johnson's turnaround jumper at the buzzer made it 41-33 going into the fourth following Godchaux's baseline drive and Conerly's reverse in transition that cut the deficit to two.

Marshall's 3-pointer from the right corner and Conerly's dish to Godchaux off a steal cut it 45-43 but Plaquemine could get no closer as Shortess answered with a 3-point play and converted 8-of-8 free throws to close the game out. Lawless added two more treys down the stretch and Harding's layup at the buzzer reflected the final tally.

Against Redemptorist, Marshall had 15, Godchaux 14, Conerly 12, Spears eight and Lawless and Harding each six. Godchaux had 13 against Pointe Coupee Central.

The Green Devils traveled to St. Charles Catholic on Wednesday in LaPlace before hosting Morgan City on Friday and going to Dutchtown on Tuesday in Geismar.
