PLAQUEMINE – Plaquemine had a total of 15 players score after taking a slight two-point lead into the second quarter on the way to a dominating 82-48 victory over Livonia in both teams' opening game of the Green Devil Holiday Classic basketball tournament on Wednesday night at PHS' gym.

The Class 4A Green Devils (11-6) also defeated 1A Ascension Catholic 63-43 in the tournament on Thursday before facing 4A Hammond in the semifinals on Friday night. The championship game was held Saturday against the winner of 5A Thibodaux and 3A Amite.

"We are getting better every game but we have a long way to go," Plaquemine coach Kirby Loupe said. "We are playing quite a few young kids and anytime you do that, you are going to go through growing pains.

"I thought we played hard and got after them defensively. It took us a little while to get started but I thought we handled the game the way we needed to once we did. Our big guys down low were too much to handle for them at times and we took advantage of that."

Plaquemine opened District 6-4A play on Dec. 21 with a 49-43 loss to Tara and will return to league play on Friday at Broadmoor before hosting Istrouma Tuesday.

"It has always been a pretty tough district," Loupe said. "We had Tara on the ropes. We didn't win that game but I think our team competed and that gives us some confidence.

"This is a big tournament and has nice prestige to it. It has been a stable in this community and our kids and fans look forward to it. I am hoping it catapults us into something special."

Devante Marshall had a game-high 16 points against Livonia. Davon Godchaux added 12, Charleston Spears 10, Clifton Young seven, Louis Conerly and Cameron Garner each five, Kevin Dotson, Jodeci Harris and Daryl Tillman each four, Deon Harding three and Kirkland James, Joseph Jordan, Darwin James, Justin Randall and Kirk Beasley each two.

Orlando Gremillion and Damion Christophe each had six to lead the 3A Wildcats (1-12). Charles Hall added five.

Marshall's baseline jumper and drive put Plaquemine ahead for good before Christophe's inside basket cut it to 13-11 going into the second quarter. Spears fed Harris inside to put the Green Devils ahead after Livonia built a 4-0 early lead.

Plaquemine used a 7-0 run to open the second quarter capped by Godchaux's putback after Young converted off a steal. The Green Devils added another 7-0 run and finished off the half on an 8-0 run to take a 41-21 halftime lead.

Spears converted twice off steals after Godchaux's 3-point play to make it 29-17 before adding two more buckets during Plaquemine's third run of the quarter.

Conerly's 3-pointer from the right corner made it 46-26 early in the third before Marshall's 3-point play, Jordan's putback and Spears' dish to Harding off a steal. Garner's trey made it 69-35 going into the final frame.

Dotson's inside basket reflected the final tally after Harding drove baseline and James was fed driving to open the fourth.

Godchaux had a game-high 16 against Ascension Catholic (5-11) and Young added 11. The Green Devils led 33-16 at the half.

Tara (13-4) jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead before taking a 33-23 halftime lead. Plaquemine cut it to 37-32 going into the fourth.

Young had 14 to lead the Green Devils. Godchaux added 13, Conerly eight, Jordan four and Marshall and Spears each two.
