Bulldogs back on track, hold off Assumption
WHITE CASTLE – White Castle of Class 1A let a seven-point lead evaporate but regrouped to win going away 64-55 over 4A Assumption on Wednesday night at WCHS' gym.
The Bulldogs (7-8) also defeated Class C Family Christian 81-56 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory after suffering through a seven-game losing skid earlier in the season. White Castle opens District 9-1A play on Tuesday at Ascension Christian before going to St. John of Plaquemine on Friday night and hosting Ascension Catholic on Tuesday.
"The schedule was put together so that we could go through some tough times," White Castle coach Troy Green said. "We go into district with some confidence and hopefully, we will be ready to roll because we have seen everything from all different types of teams and nothing will be new to us."
White Castle lost to the Mustangs (2-14) 48-43 in the Brusly Tournament before defeating host Assumption 64-55 in another tournament earlier in the season.
"We were kind of at full throttle and able to get them back," Green said. "We had a chance to put them away and didn't because of turnovers and silly mistakes but that is going to happen when you have a young team. Learning how to play on the go and getting them minutes is what it is all about."
DeAndre Bellock had a game-high 27 points for White Castle. Swayne Edwards added 17, Samson Westley 12, Moses Young six and Shawn Williams two.
Coy Smith led the Mustangs with 16 points. Malik Mills added 13, Michael Muse 12 and Kenyatta Charles 11.
Mills' jumper just before the buzzer gave Assumption the lead 43-42 going into the fourth quarter but Bellock' opening pair of free throws put the Bulldogs ahead for good.
Edwards' layup off a steal with just under a minute remaining preceded a pair of free throws for the final tally after the Mustangs had cut the deficit to one possession.
Westley's 3-pointer from the left wing and drive put White Castle ahead 49-45 before Edwards' trey from the left wing made it 56-51.
The Bulldogs led 26-23 at halftime but Assumption used a 10-2 run to take the lead on Muse's drive before Bellock took it right back with a slam dunk in transition.
Bellock had 12 points in the first quarter to push White Castle to a 14-13 lead and added seven in the second frame.
The Bullodgs led 12-11 going into the second quarter against Family Christian (16-13) and 33-27 at the half before heading into the fourth ahead 53-48.
Bellock had a game-high 39 points including five 3-pointers. Edwards and Westley each added 14, Young eight, Jacori Washington and Jatyre Carter two and Tyrie Lang one.
J.J. Holmes led the Flames with 31, while Gummie Williams added 12.
