Catapulting: Plaquemine defeats Thibodaux to win Green Devil Classic

PLAQUEMINE – Host Plaquemine of Class 4A defeated 5A Thibodaux 48-43 in the championship game of the Green Devil Holiday Classic basketball tournament on Dec. 29 at PHS' gym.

The Green Devils (14-6, 1-1) also defeated 3A Livonia 82-48, 1A Ascension Catholic 63-43 and 4A Hammond 58-45 to advance to the final of the tournament. Plaquemine moved back into District 6-4A play with a 57-42 victory over Broadmoor on Friday before hosting Istrouma on Tuesday, traveling to St. Michael the Archangel on Friday and hosing Belaire Tuesday.

"We are getting better every game but we have a long way to go," Plaquemine coach Kirby Loupe said. "We are playing quite a few young kids and anytime you do that, you are going to go through growing pains.

"This is a big tournament and has nice prestige to it. It has been a stable in this community and our kids and fans look forward to it. I am hoping it catapults us into something special because it has always been a tough district."

In the final, Davon Godchaux and Devante Marshall led the Green Devils with 14 points each. Clifton Young added 13, while Trevon Cole led Thibodaux with 11. Plaquemine led 24-15 at the half.

Godchaux had a game-high 22 points against Hammond as the Green Devils led 31-19 at the half. George Perkins led the Tors with 10.

Against Ascension Catholic, Godchaux had another game-high 16 points and Young added 11 as the Green Devils led 33-16 at the half.

Marshall had a game-high 16 points against Livonia, while Godchaux added 12, Charleston Spears 10, Young seven and Louis Conerly and Cameron Garner each five. Plaquemine led 41-21 at the half.
