PLAQUEMINE – Istrouma used an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter and claim a 54-43 District 6-4A victory on Tuesday night after Plaquemine cut the deficit to four going into the frame at PHS' gym.

The Green Devils (14-8, 1-3) also fell at St. Michael the Archangel on Friday night 57-34. Plaquemine will travel to Lutcher and Tara Friday and Tuesday after hosting Belaire on Tuesday.

"We can't hang our head on this," Plaquemine coach Kirby Loupe said. "We just have to look at the film and clean it up because the effort was there. Every time we had a chance to cut into the deficit, they hit a big shot. We just couldn't get over the hump.

"One of the keys going into the game was not falling behind early and we did. We just had to scratch and claw the whole way."

Devante Marshall led the Green Devils with 18 points. Louis Conerly added 13, Davon Godchaux nine and Deon Harding three.

"He played hard," Loupe said of Marshall. "It took him a little while to get involved in the game but once he did, I thought he attacked the rim hard and knocked down a couple of jump shots."

Tevin Walker led the Indians (14-6, 5-0) with a game-high 20 points. Derrick Thomas added 12, Carvis Kaigler eight and Marquise Kaigler and Josh Green each six.

Marshall answered Green's 3-pointer from the right corner with one of his own from the opposite end at the buzzer to cut it to 36-32 going into the fourth. Conerly's trey had cut it to 33-29.

But Thomas's three-ball and drive opened the fourth quarter and was followed by Carvis Kaigler's inside basket to make it 43-32. Plaquemine could get no closer than nine the rest of the way despite Godchaux's jumper and putback.

Istrouma jumped to an early 8-2 lead on Kaigler's spin before Marshall's 3-point play cut it to 13-10 after two baskets under the goal.

Walker's 3-pointer pushed the Indians lead to 18-10 in the second quarter before Conerly answered from the left wing. At the 3:19 mark, Kaigler and Godchaux got into a shoving match at midcourt resulting in technical fouls for each but no ejections.

The Indians led 26-18 at the half following Marshall's spin after consecutive baskets by Thomas.

St. Michael took a 14-11 lead into the second quarter before the Green Devils tied it 23-23 at halftime but the Warriors held Plaquemine to just two third quarter points while building a 41-25 lead heading into the fourth.

Conerly led the Green Devils with 11 points including two 3-pointers. Charleston Spears added seven, Jamie Lawless five, Kirkland Jones three and Marshall and Godchaux each two.

Paul Ragusa had a game-high 21 points for St. Michael (13-9, 1-3). Jacob Evans added 16, David Ventress nine, Nick Arcement seven and Moses Girod four.
