PLAQUEMINE - St. John the Evangelist High School held Catholic-Pointe Coupee to just two first half points on the way to a 42-30 non-district victory on Friday  night.

The Lady Eagles (3-10), under coach Chase Mancuso, hosted Christian Life on Monday.

“The season started out kind of rough but we are learning on the fly and we have gotten a lot better the last couple of weeks,” Mancuso said.

“We are continuing to learn but I wanted us to finish better. We didn’t rebound and turned the ball over a little bit too much in the second half making it closer than it needed to be.”

Shelbi Strickland led the Lady Eagles with 15 points. Samantha Rivet added 14, while Payton Passantino had seven, Carlee Smith four and Keri Yarbrough two.

Rivet scored all six points in the first quarter. Passantino added seven in the second to push the lead to 23-2 at the half.

Strickland posted nine in the third for St. John. She fed Rivet in transition to make it 37-13 going into the fourth after nailing a 3-pointer from the right corner and converting twice in transition, the first a pull up jumper.

Strickland’s baseline jumper and dish to Rivet were St. John’s only baskets in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hornets outscored them 17-5 in the frame.
