PLAQUEMINE - Plaquemine Senior High School blew open a eight-point halftime lead on the way to a 71-43 non-district victory over Iberville Parish rival East Iberville on Friday night.

The Green Devils (11-7), under coach Donald Ray Johnson, also defeated Livonia 59-23 on Monday before traveling to Woodlawn-B.R. Thursday and McKinley Friday. Plaquemine hosts East Ascension Monday.

"I wasn't really pleased with our effort," Johnson said. "We wanted to treat it like a district game but we didn't execute well enough on defense, gave up too many offensive rebounds and didn't get to a lot of loose balls. We are going to need those plays against the teams we play in district. We can't beat good teams playing like that."

East Iberville (5-12), under coach Doug Schultz, hosts Livonia Friday and opens District 8-1A play Tuesday at West St. John.

"We are young and just have to fight through it," Schultz said. "They were more physical than us and we fell for it. District begins around the corner and hopefully we will be better."

Devante "D.J." Marshall and Louis "Trey" Conerly each had 15 points to lead the Green Devils. Demetrius Franklin added 10, Darwin James, Kirkland Jones and Jodeci Harris each eight, Clifton "C.J." Young three and Austin Mitchell and Damion Oubre each two.

Quantae Johnson had a game-high 24 points for the Tigers. Tyler James added seven, Devin Johnson four and Khris Grace, Junius Chong, Jachai Scott, Kedrick Oubre and Malcolm Calloway each two.

Plaquemine used a 12-4 run to close out the third quarter and take control. Marshall's layup off a steal pushed the lead to 51-30 before Johnson banked a lane jumper and converted a putback to cut the deficit to 17 going into the fourth quarter.

Harris' putback reflected the final tally. Marshall's dunk opened the frame before Franklin converted twice in transition. Johnson's jumper cut it to 65-43 following Harris' hook shot.

Johnson's 3-pointer and layup off a steal opened the contest to give East Iberville an early lead but James quickly answered with a pair of treys to put the Green Devils ahead for good.

Plaquemine led 23-16 going into the second quarter after Johnson and Conerly traded 3-pointers from the left corner and James converted twice inside, the first for a 3-point play.

Jones drove baseline and converted off a steal to open the second frame but Johnson answered with a layup off a steal and jumper in the lane as Plaquemine led 31-23 at the half.
