PLAQUEMINE - Plaquemine Senior High School overcame a fourth quarter surge by St. Michael the Archangel to claim a 51-46 District 6-4A victory on Monday night at PSHS' gym.

The Green Devils (14-9, 2-0), under coach Donald Ray Johnson, also defeated Lutcher 58-42 on Friday. Plaquemine travels to Tara Friday.

"We have to control the tempo to win and we had a defensive mindset tonight," Johnson said. "They can play so we wanted to be real aggressive with them. We threw a couple trick defenses at them and I think that helped us out.

"We know we are not going to miss shots all the time. If we get our feet set, we are going to make more than we miss and we got some finishes around the basket."

Devante "D.J." Marshall led the Green Devils with 19 points. Louis "Trey" Conerly added 11 including three 3-pointers, while Clifton "C.J." Young had eight, Darwin James six, Cameron Garner five and Kirkland Jones three.

Paul Ragusa led the Warriors (18-5, 1-1) with a game-high 20 points. Jacob Evans added 12, Nick Arcement five and Tyler Schiner, Michael Miketinas and Brett Hartman each three.

Ragusa's bucket put St. Michael ahead 46-45 but Young answered with a roller with 42.4 seconds remaining to give the Green Devils the lead for good. James added a pair of free throws before Evans threw up an air ball in the closing seconds and Young's free throws reflected the final tally.

Evans' 3-point play erased a seven-point deficit to tie it 44-44 with 3:07 left to play after Ragusa converted off a steal.

Conerly traded 3-pointers with both Ragusa and Arcement before Plaquemine took a 42-33 lead into the fourth quarter following his assist to Marshall off a block.

Marshall's baseline drive for a 3-point play put Plaquemine ahead 32-25 following another and one off a reverse. Miketinas' 3-pointer opened the second half but James answered with a three ball from the top of the key before Ragusa's jumper.

Young's drive gave the Green Devils a 21-20 halftime lead following Garner's 3-pointer from the right corner and Evans' three-point play.

Plaquemine led 16-13 on a three ball by Conerly from the left corner after Marshall's and one putback. Young muscled his way inside to open the frame and put the Green Devils up 10-9.

The Green Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Young's baseline drive and putback but Hartman's 3-point play briefly gave the Warriors the lead.

Marshall's spin put Plaquemine back ahead as did Garner's drive but St. Michael led 9-8 heading into the second quarter.

Plaquemine led 25-19 going into the second frame against Lutcher and extended it to 36-27 at the half before the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Young led the Green Devils with 13 points including nine in the first quarter. Marshall added 11, Garner eight on two 3-pointers, Conerly and James each six, Jones and Demetrius Franklin each five and Jodeci Harris three.
