PLAQUEMINE - Plaquemine Senior High School stayed within striking distance throughout but couldn’t overcome St. Michael the Archangel in a 59-48 District 6-4A loss on Monday night at PSHS’ gym.

The Lady Green Devils (13-9, 1-2), under coach Brannon Dillon, also defeated Lutcher 50-28 on Friday. Plaquemine travels to Tara on Friday.

“We needed that win and were there at the end,” Dillon said. “We match up with them but are still learning and inexperienced. Those kids play ball year round. We are on the same page athletically but their IQ is just a little bit higher right now. It is good that they know we have to play them again.”

Asia Nelson led Plaquemine with 22 points. Kiffani Young added 10, O’Neisha Batiste nine, Myiesha Bell six and Jernasha Collins two.

Tyler Morrison had a game-high 27 for St. Michael (14-12, 3-0)  including three 3-pointers. Alex Wicker and Sydnei Jones each added 10, Tylor Ron six, Sabree Wilson four and Jordan Schexnayder two.

Nelson’s jumper off a backcourt steal just before the buzzer cut it to 12-9 going into the second quarter.

Morrison’s 3-pointer from the right wing put the Lady Warriors ahead 23-12 in the second frame after trading drives with Nelson following Jones’ dish to Wicker in transition.

Nelson’s hop cut it to 26-20 at halftime following another Morrison trey from the left wing following Batiste’s layup off a steal.

Bell’s putback trimmed the deficit to 29-26 early in the third quarter following Nelson’s lane drive and Wicker’s 3-pointer from the right wing.

St. Michael led 43-32 going into the fourth quarter following Morrison’s half court shot at the buzzer. Batiste’s jumper had cut the deficit to six again after Nelson’s layup off a backcourt steal and Collins’ bank shot but the Lady Warriors answered with jumpers by Wicker and Morrison.

Collins’ transition basket opened the fourth quarter but Morrison followed with a 3-point play before Batiste’s floater in the lane. Nelson’s spin cut it to 48-41.

Plaquemine got as close as 51-47 with 1:36 remaining on Nelson’s 3-pointer from the left wing with a hand in her face after she converted a 3-point play on a putback and in transition but they could get no closer as St. Michael converted 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch and Morrison fed Ron off a steal to reflect the final tally.

The Lady Green Devils led 18-0 going into the second quarter against Lutcher and 30-14 at the half before taking a 48-17 lead into the fourth.

Nelson finished with 14 points, while Bell added 10, Young nine, Batiste seven, Collins six and Asia Marshall three.
