BATON ROUGE - Plaquemine Senior High School completed the first round of District 6-4A play undefeated with a 45-41 victory over Belaire on Monday night.

The Green Devils (16-9, 4-0), under coach Donald Ray Johnson, also played Lutcher Tuesday. Plaquemine travels to St. Michael the Archangel Friday and hosts Tara Tuesday.

"We were fortunate to escape the first round winning all four games," Johnson said. "We are in control and feel pretty good right now.

"We just got out of our routine and they were real aggressive. We played to their style and didn't take care of the ball like we are supposed to."

Plaquemine led 20-17 at the half after the score was tied 12-12 going into the second quarter. The Green Devils pushed the lead to 33-27 heading into the final frame.

Clifton "C.J." Young led Plaquemine with nine points. Cameron Garner and Devante "D.J." Marshall each added eight, Louis "Trey" Conerly seven, Demetrius Franklin and Darwin James each four, Jodeci Harris three and Kirkland Jones one. Garner had two 3-pointers and Conerly and James each one.

Kentrell Smith led Belaire with 14. Timothy Johnson added nine and Darvious Williams seven.
