Lady Bulldogs pull away from St. John in second half

PLAQUEMINE - White Castle High School pushed an 11-point halftime lead into a 59-23 District 8-1A victory over St. John on Tuesday night at SJHS’ gym.

The Lady Bulldogs (13-13, 5-1), under coach Tammy Pierce, sit in sole possession of second-place in league standings. White Castle fell to West St. John 52-40 on Monday and host Ascension Catholic Friday and West St. John Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles (6-16, 0-6), under coach Chase Mancuso, also fell to Ascension Catholic 67-47 Thursday. St. John travels to West St. John Friday and East Iberville Tuesday.

White Castle led 11-7 going into the second quarter before taking a 25-14 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs outscored St. John 17-4 in the third quarter.

Shylar O’Bear had a game-high 25 points for the Lady Bulldogs including five 3-pointers. Skylar O’Bear added 19, Alaina Williams eight, Blessing Franklin four and Damonique Jenkins two.

Payton Passantino led St. John with nine. Shelbi Strickland added four, Grace Robichaux three and Samantha Rivet and Keri Yarbrough each two.

Passantino fed Yarbrough inside to open the second half and cut the deficit to single digits but White Castle answered when Skylar O’Bear dished to Franklin in transition and nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing.

Shylar O’Bear then sank three straight 3-pointers and Skylar O’Bear’s buzzer beating lane drive put White Castle ahead 42-18 going into the final stanza.

Rivet’s 18-footer answered another 3-pointer by Shylar O’Bear to open the fourth but O’Bear converted a 3-point play, 3-pointer from the left corner and in transition while also feeding Williams off a steal to push the lead to 55-20.

Robichaux’s 3-pointer from the top of the key reflected the final tally following Williams’ transition bucket.

West St. John led the Lady Bulldogs 16-10 going into the second quarter and 26-22 at the half before taking a 40-32 lead into the fourth.

Skylar O’Bear led White Castle with 22 points including three 3-pointers. Shylar O’Bear added 11, Williams seven and Franklin and Brooklyn Falcon each four.

JaJuan Nicholas led the Lady Rams with 22 points and Jaquanna Hunter added 12.

Ascension Catholic led St. John 24-11 going into the second quarter and 30-22 at the half before taking 48-32 lead into the fourth.

Strickland finished with 19 points to lead the Lady Eagles. Yarbrough added 11, Passantino six, Rivet five and Carlee Smith, Gracie Trahan and Carolyne Glaser each two.

Jordynn Brown led Ascension Catholic with 22 points. Raeshaun Melancon added 18, Meagan Brooks 10 and Daija Harvey seven.
