PLAQUEMINE - Ascension Christian defeated St. John 54-41 in the District 8-1A finale on Friday night at SJHS’ gym.

The Lady Eagles finish the season with an overall record of 6-21 under coach Chase Mancuso.

“While the results were not what we expected or how we wanted the season to go, I am proud of the way the girls continued to compete and play hard despite the outcome,” Mancuso said. “We graduated about 70 percent of our scoring from last season and we never were able to replace that gap this year. The last two weeks we played much better but it was against some very good teams and we didn’t do enough to win.

“We have a very good group of players coming up who are really excited about the game of basketball. They got some valuable experience this year and should prove beneficial to our program in the next few years.”

Ascension Christian jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first quarter before taking a 26-17 lead into the half. The Lady Lions led 39-22 going into the fourth frame.

Shelbi Strickland led St. John with 15 points. Payton Passantino added 14, Samantha Rivet 10 and Keri Yarbrough two.
