PLAQUEMINE - St. John the Evangelist High School wrapped up District 8-1A play on Friday night with an 81-21 victory over Ascension Christian at SJHS’ gym.

The Eagles (11-19, 1-9), under coach Antonio Broadway, snapped an 11-game losing skid in the victory. St. John fell to St. Michael the Archangel 68-40 in the regular season finale Tuesday.

“We just wanted to finish out the season on a good note and get ready for next year,” Broadway said. “We let it slip away from us when we played them before and just wanted to keep the floor open and play our game. We put a lot of pressure on the ball with a full-court press and ran some set plays.

“We are still young and want to win some ball games next year because that is what motivates kids.”

St. John jumped out to a 19-1 lead going into the second quarter and led 42-6 at the half before taking a 63-8 lead into the final frame.

Hayden Hemenway led the Eagles with a game-high 31 points. Willie Williams added 20 including four 3-pointers, while Benjamin Poirrier had 14, Bailey Whittington six, Gavin Primeaux and Collin Crockett each four and Princeton Young two.
