ST. GABRIEL - District 9-1A champion West St. John cruised to a 47-0 victory over East Iberville on Friday night to secure the league title.

The Tigers (3-6, 1-4) dropped their fourth straight to conclude the regular season and finished No. 44 in official power ranking released by the LHSAA. West St. John (6-3, 5-0), the state runner-up last season, earned the No. 6 seed in the Class 1A playoffs and will host No. 27 Opelousas Catholic.

"From top to bottom, they are the best team we have played this year," East Iberville coach John Young said. "We were outmatched from the start and just got outmanned. Our kids fought hard but it is always a numbers game with us. We weren't that healthy and only dressed 16 but the kids gave a good effort and I am proud of the season they had.

"When you have guys playing offense and defense, it is kind of hard to matchup with guys that just play on one side of the ball. We couldn't get much going offensively. We moved the ball at times but definitely not enough to be competitive in that game."

Javonta Sherman rushed for 88 yards in the loss for East Iberville. Lamont Kerr had 70 return yards to go with a couple of receptions. Tiger quarterback Junius Chong was intercepted twice on long passes while facing the blitzing Ram defense and Rashaan Williams recovered a fumble.

"West St. John is a blitzing team and will load the box on you and try to bring more than you can block," Young said. "We didn't throw the ball extremely well because of the pressure but we popped some big draws on them because they were so fast getting up the field.

"We just have to work on getting stronger in the offseason and try to put together a run for next year."
