Eagles can't keep pace with North Vermilion

MAURICE - North Vermilion jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and cruised to a 47-23 non-district victory over St. John on Friday night in Vermilion Parish.

The Eagles (0-4), under coach Oliver "Cricket" Crockett, were outgained by the Patriots (1-3) in total yardage 340-328. North Vermilion used a balanced attack with 189 yards rushing and 151 yards passing to counter St. John's 291 yards on the ground.

Trey Broussard scored three rushing touchdowns for the Patriots and quarterback Ty Desormeaux completed 11-of-18 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown.

Ben Poirrier rushed for two touchdowns for St. John. Eagle quarterback Hunter Schnebelen rushed for a touchdown and completed 2-of-11 passes for 37 yards but was intercepted twice.

Taylor Abshire's 4-yard run put North Vermilion on the board in the first quarter. Broussard's 22-yard run gave the Patriots a 14-7 lead following Poirrier's 1-yard burst.

Broussard's 47-yard field goal put North Vermilion ahead 24-14 at the half following Poirrier's 4-yard touchdown and Desormeaux's 6-yard scoring strike to Nick Cooper.

Schnebelen's 79-yard touchdown run came in the fourth quarter and Tyler St. Germain's third point after touchdown kick cut it to 47-21. The Eagle defense forced intentional grounding for a safety to reflect the final tally.

St. John is on the road again this week traveling to Erath in Vermilion Parish.
