Belaire rolls over Tigers

BATON ROUGE - Belaire jumped out to a 32-point halftime lead and cruised to a 46-8 non-district victory over East Iberville on Thursday night at Olympia Stadium.
The Class 1A Tigers (0-5), under coach John Young, were outgained in total yardage 448-281 with 356 of it coming on the ground for 4A Belaire (1-4).
"We're just trying to get better," Young said. "We've got about 25 players that are mostly freshmen and sophomores and they played hard against a lot bigger school. We wanted to play a tougher non-district schedule and we are getting better every week."
Tiger quarterback Junius Chong completed 13-of-24 passes for 126 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Joseph Bailey had 98 yards receiving and added 90 yards rushing.
Jeremy Barnes rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns for the Bengals. Philip Stevens added 149 yards rushing and three scores. Belaire quarterback Tyler Woods completed 6-of-10 passes for 92 yards.
Stevens' 1-yard run put Belaire on the board before Barnes 9-yard run gave the Bengals a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Barnes sandwiched touchdown runs from 31 and 1 yard around Stevens' 2-yard run to push the lead to 32-0 at the half.
Chong's 12-yard touchdown run put the Tigers on the board in the fourth quarter after a 32-yard run to pay dirt by Barnes. Stevens' 48-yard run reflected the final tally.
East Iberville opens District 8-1A play at parish rival White Castle on Friday night at Milton "Rocky" Ourso Jr. Stadium.
