DRY CREEK - White Castle High School jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead but had to fend off East Beauregard in a 30-22 Class 1A regional non-select playoff victory on Friday night.

The No. 10 seed Bulldogs (8-4), under coach Lamar Thomas, edged the Trojans (8-3) in total yardage 305-298 with 227 of it coming on the ground. White Castle advances to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 2 seed Mangham, a 49-0 winner over Delhi. The victor moves on to the semifinals against the winner of No. 3 West St. John and No. 11 Block.

“We were able to get the job done but they were a big, physical football team,” Thomas said. “It was important to go up on them early because it didn’t allow them to stay patient in their offense and forced them to take more chances down field. We knew we were going to have to crowd the box and really make our speed show.

“We just had to play together as a team and force them to play our brand of football. Dictating the style of play is important in the playoffs and if we can make the opponent play our game we have a great chance of winning. We have to play fast on defense, utilize our speed, try to hit on all cylinders and make sure we are all doing the right things on offense.”

Daryl Young rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Bulldog attack and Dontrell Taylor had 131 yards rushing and one touchdown. Bulldog quarterback Jacory Jones completed 6-of-9 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown.

“Scooter is getting back on track for us after he has hampered with a hamstring,” Thomas said. “We have been careful with him because he does so many things for us. Dontrell is just a very explosive runner and capable every time he touches the ball.”

Aaron Milner rushed for 109 yards for East Beauregard. Trojan quarterback Josh Fletcher completed 4-of-9 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown.

East Beauregard got to within 24-22 during a five minute span in the fourth quarter with touchdown runs from 26 yards by Ashton Wascom and 5 yards by Logan Fox.

But Young added his third score of the night to reflect the final tally with a 6-yard run as the Bulldog defense stymied East Beauregard twice down the stretch.

Young’s 1-yard touchdown run cracked the scoreboard in the first quarter and Taylor ran in the conversion to put White Castle ahead 8-0. Fletcher connected with Thad Schecher for a 26-yard touchdown to cut it to 8-6 still in the first quarter.

White Castle took control in the second quarter courtesy Taylor’s 1-yard run and Young’s 24-yard touchdown reception from Jones. Young and Taylor each rushed for a two-point conversion.
