Plaquemine High's head football coach Paul Distefano hopes to point his Green Devils in the direction of a win this week for the Green Devils' homecoming game against St. Michael High.

Despite a dramatic 27-point fourth quarter rally, the Plaquemine High Green Devils came up short against Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge Friday night, 39-27.

The Green Devils were left scoreless in the first half and trailed 10-0 at the half.

About halfway through the first quarter, the Parkview Baptist Eagles put seven points on the scoreboard  on a kick from with a 1-yard run by Alexander Aucoin, capped with a PAT from Mason McKey.

With only about a minute left in the opening quarter, the Eagles added a 24-yard field goal and three points by McKey.

Near the end of the first half, having been held from scoring by the Green Devils, with only 1:12 left on the clock, Parkview Baptist’s Darrel Cyprian punched in a rushing TD from four yards out and McKey once again added the point after.

Only a single score was chalked up the third quarter, an Eagle touchdown on a pick-six interception by Hayden Warren, who ran 50 yards after picking off the Green Devil pass. The extra points after this score came on a 2-point conversion run by Cyprian.

The score looked grim at that point for the boys from Plaquemine High, but they never lost their determination, even after being held scoreless through three quarters and trailing by 25.

Michael Sproles began the scoring for the visiting Green Devils with a 7-yard rushing touchdown, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. The score moved to a less intimidating 25-6.

The next score also came from Plaquemine High, this time on a 9-yard run for a TD by Wayne Toussant and Brayden David added the PAT to take the score to 25-12.

Parkview Baptist’s Kyle Washington then fired up the home crowd with a 50-yard kickoff return, topped with a McKey PAT, moving the score to 32-12 with about a half of the fourth quarter to go.

Only the Green Devils would score after that, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Melvin McClay added 6 points with an 8-yard run, topped off with another successful David point after kick. With only 31 seconds left on the clock, Codi Willis scored the game’s last points with a 14-yard pass from Sproles. David added the PAT.

The Plaquemine High Green Devils hope to return to their winning ways when they face St. Michael Friday night at home. Kickoff for the homecoming game is set for 7 p.m.
