PHS prevails over St. Michael in 7-4A opener

Weather conditions proved a mightier opponent for both Plaquemine and St. Michael the Archangel, at least on Friday night.

The Green Devils traveled to Baton Rouge’s Olympia Stadium for the District 4-A opener against St. Michael the Archangel, where they held the lead going toward the half before Mother Nature interfered. By Saturday, sunny skies prevailed for the Green Devils, who held off St. Michael 26-13 in District 7-4A action.

Lightning and heavy rainfall forced a delay of more than 90 minutes before the game was tabled until Saturday.

The delay went into effect in the second quarter.

PHS took the lead in the opening stanza Friday night when quarterback Devin Butler scored on a 1-yard sneak on a fourth down to cap a nine-play drive.

Kobe Major (20) ran for two touchdowns in Plaquemine’s 26-13 win in the District 7-4A opener against St. Michael the Archangel. The Green Devils host Belaire in district action Friday at 7 p.m.

Kobe Major took a screen pass from reserve QB Michael Mitchell for a 73-yard run downfield to the end zone to put PHS ahead 13-0. Plaquemine returned to Olympia on Saturday and finished the job when Major struck again, this time on a 2-yard TD.

The Green Devils padded their lead on a field goal by Shiban Alheidari.

COMING UP … PHS returns to the friendly confines of Andrew Canova Green Devil Stadium on Friday for action against Belaire (1-3). The Bengals head into the fray after a 59-6 loss against Central.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Standouts for the Bengals include senior wide receiver Dorwin Dunbar, junior running back Denichlass Jeter and junior wide receiver Bertrell Williams.
