Benton’s Pearce Russell wins Shreveport Times Week 6 football Athlete of the Week

Benton’s Pearce Russell secured enough votes this week to win the Times online poll for Football Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.

A standout receiver for the Tigers, Russell becomes the second Benton football winner of the 2021-22 school year.  He joins Kamron Evans of Huntington, Aiden Colvin of Benton and Braylon Finney of Captain Shreve as winners in the weekly poll.

Russell and his supporters totaled 15,968 votes, a solid 36% the 44,464 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Fulghum to top a field of nine additional candidates, including second-place Zyion Claville of Huntington, who totaled an impressive 15,274 votes (34%).

Russell will receive a backpack, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s.

The junior had caught 29 passes for 610 yards and seven touchdowns heading into Thursday’s game with Byrd. That yardage mark is the third best in Shreveport-Bossier City through six weeks of football. 

Others on the sixth ballot of the school year included Christian Jones,  Byrd; De’coldest Crawford, Green Oaks; Markecion Carr, Arcadia; Turner McLelland, Glenbrook; Carnez Hillmon, Dealing; Omarion Miller, North Caddo; Tray Taylor, Loyola and Brody Page, Captain Shreve

They were chosen because of their performance the previous week or because their names were submitted by their coach. The Times poll is posted each Monday at with a new slate of student-athletes who play football.

The Times online only poll runs through Thursday night.
